You can plan your Torquay holidays to include a visit to various tourist spots, beaches, shopping sprees where you can shop to your heart's content and the like. However, if you love sports you can enjoy a game or two of golf during your sojourn at the Torquay holiday cottages. Since the place has quite a few golf courses with stunning views and lush greens, you can tee and enjoy your golf holidays to the fullest. Here are a few golf courses for you to enjoy.
Torquay Golf Club
This is a delightful parkland course that offers you eye-catching views over Lyme Bay on its east and Dartmoor, which is on its west. In case you are waiting for an enjoyable and excellent test of your golfing prowess during your Torquay holidays, this golf course is sure to satisfy you. In case you are staying at the holiday cottages during your summer holidays, you can participate in the various open competitions that the club organises in the months of May, June, July and August.
The Torquay Golf Club celebrated the completion of 100 years in 2009. Famous names like J.H. Taylor and Harry Vardon are associated with this golf club. This was also the place in Torquay where Nick Faldo – the major winner six times, won his first cheque as a young professional winner.
The old club was originally a nine hole course on Walls Hill in Babbacombe. However, with the passage of time and the increasing popularity of the game, Walls Hill became unsuitable to host famous people like Braid, Vardon, Ray, Taylor, and Herd as well as the large number of people who frequented the course to watch the game. Thus, a new company called The Torquay New Golf Course Company Limited was incorporated in 1909, which purchased a large tract of land and built the golf course having an appearance similar to that of a cricket pavilion at a cost of more than £2,000, which was opened on 20th May 1911. This is one golf course you should play at during your Torquay holidays or while staying at the holiday cottages.
Dartmouth Golf and Country Club
If you are staying at one of the holiday cottages in or around Dartmouth, a visit to this golf course will be a ideal. Located just minutes away from the historical town of Dartmouth, this golf course is regarded as one of the premier golf courses of Devon, which is worth a watch during your Torquay holidays. Though avid golfers on a golf break are sure to enjoy the excellent facilities at the Dartmouth Golf and Country Club, even non golfers can take a peek at all the action as the place is an ideal location to experience the game of golf enthusiasts from close quarters.
These and some other golf courses in Torquay are worth checking out while you stay at the holiday cottages during your Torquay holidays.
