As one of the world’s most popular participation sports, millions of people play golf every weekend – with some fitting in the odd round through the week as well. Its relatively peaceful nature and the opportunity to spend some time enjoying the scenery are just two of the reasons why the game has such a dedicated worldwide following. Millions more tune into TV coverage of the sport’s major tournaments, while golf’s biggest names are among the most famous figures in global sport – and, of course, the fabled 19th hole has cemented a unique place in sporting folklore. But whatever your handicap, it’s always important to be vigilant whilst out on the golf course. Although golf might seem almost genteel in comparison to some other sports, there are some potential pitfalls that go with it. It’s easy to lose your concentration a bit as you come towards the end of your round, but you may find yourself at greater risk of injury if you become less attentive about what your fellow golfers are doing. For example, if you inadvertently wander into another player’s line of fire, you may end up catching a stray golf ball to the head, which could potentially cause serious injury. In addition, any golfer will tell you just how important getting your swing is to your overall game. Many golfing enthusiasts spend years working on their action, and once you’ve got it right you’ll probably want to stick to it – the odd tweak here and there notwithstanding. However, no matter how well-drilled your swing is, a momentary lapse of concentration or a slight slip can leave you with a muscle strain, tear, or pull. Depending on the severity of the injury, it could leave you out of action – and potentially unable to return to work – for days or even weeks on end, something few of us can afford in the current climate of financial uncertainty. It’s also worth bearing in mind just how expensive golfing equipment can be. The cost of golf clubs, trollies and other bits and pieces can mount up to a truly eye-watering figure, so it makes sense to take good care of them to ensure you get the most out of them. Make sure you clean them regularly and store them properly in order to protect them against rust. It’s also important to store them away in a secure place, so as not to attract the attention of would-be thieves. Golfing gear often has a considerable resale value, which can make it a particularly attractive proposition to burglars.
