The Skoda Roomster is the first car that is not based entirely on an existing Volkswagen Group platform since the Volkswagen Group's takeover of the brand. Although it is based on the A4 platform there are some unique additions.
The name is a combination of the words 'Room' and 'Roadster', and the split personality theme is played in the design with a carefully honed 'driving room' ahead of the B-pillars, and a generous 'living room' to the rear.
The Skoda Roomster takes its internal combustion engines from its Volkswagen Group relatives. Petrol engines include the multi-valve inline three cylinder 1.2 litre, with power initially DIN-rated at 47 kilowatts (63 bhp), but now it is at 51 kilowatts ( 68 bhp), followed by the 1.4 litre and 1.6 litre inline four cylinder engines with power of 63 kilowatts (84 bhp) and 77 kilowatts (103 bhp). The 1.6 litre is also available with a six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission on the most luxurious models
0 - 62 mph is 13 Seconds
Top Speed is 106 mph
5-Speed Manual Unleaded Petrol
Urban - 31.4 mpg
Extra Urban - 49.6 mpg
Combined - 40.9 mpg
Every Roomster comes with front, side and curtain airbags, as well as ISOFIX child seat mountings. Deadlocks, an immobiliser and a visible vehicle identification number make life harder for thieves.
There are three individual seats in the rear, all three can be reclined, folded or removed. Alternatively, with the centre seat taken out, the other two can be moved inward to give more shoulder-room, and they also slide back and forth so you can choose the balance between legroom and luggage space.
The Roomster first appeared at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show as a design study. With a good response from press and public and with the support of a lengthy list of potential customers the car recently made it into many showrooms. The production model looks a little squarer than the showcar but otherwise very little has changed.
