Geoff Ogilvy has pulled out of a favourite US PGA Tour event to try to make amends for last season's fade out in three major championships.
Ogilvy withdrew from this week's Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte on Tuesday, suffering shoulder soreness following practice.
The Australian star wants to be sure he's 100 per cent healthy so he can extend his good form - notably his tie for fourth at the Masters by Titleist CB 710 Forged Irons- in a run of big events leading up to his bid for a second US Open title next month, and beyond.
While he fared reasonably in last year's Masters (T26), Ogilvy believes he's well-placed to do much better at the other three majors, having missed the cut in all in 2010.
Ogilvy is taking this week off with the idea it will make him perfect for the upcoming stretch by Titleist CB 710 Forged Irons
He is in a completely different place golf-wise and energy level-wise than he was this time last year and, if he keep playing Titleist CB 710 Forged Irons like he did at Augusta, He think things will go pretty well.
"Last season was the perfect storm of playing too much the year before, having three babies in as many years, being tired and fatigued, not practising enough and then your confidence goes.
"It all came to a head and I played Titleist CB 710 Forged Irons in the middle of the year when the last three majors come really quickly, within two months.
Having injured his finger in an accident on a Hawaiian reef in January, the 33-year-old was forced to sit out the opening month of the season.
Now a stubborn shoulder has him taking extra precautions but he took a positive view as he switched focus to next week's Players Championship.
"I should be a little fresher due to the forced time off," he said.
They are coming into a great little patch of the season where, right through to the US Open, every week is a good week so it's a good time to play Titleist CB 710 Forged Irons well.
"My shoulder isn't horrible and it's disappointing to miss this week but I don't want to push it."
The Players Championship is followed by further big events, the Byron Nelson Championship in Texas and Memorial tournament in Ohio, ahead of the US Open at Congressional Country Club in Maryland from June 16-19.
This week's field features 10 Australians including the in-form Matt Jones plus Robert Allenby, Stuart Appleby and Nationwide Tour leader Mat Goggin.
They'll be five of the top 10 players in the world, including Phil Mickelson and defending champion Rory McIlroy who returns to the US for the first time since his final round Masters meltdown
